Wellness 101

Introductions of the 7 Dimensions of Wellness

You Can't Make Everyone Happy. You're Not Pizza.

Social Wellness. Social wellness the ability to relate to and connect with other people in our world. It promotes interdependence with others and encourages harmony in one’s family and friendships. Ways to foster social wellness include spending time with friends or having a family game night.

 

Human Nature

Environmental Wellness. Environment wellness is the ability to recognize our own responsibility for the quality of the air, the water and the land that surrounds us. It promotes harmony between one’s life and the earth and encourages the individual to minimize harm to the environment. Ways to foster environmental wellness include conserving water, recycling, taking care of our homes, and spending time outside.

Occupational Wellness. Occupational Wellness encourages individuals to hold a job that will give them a sense of personal satisfaction and enrichment and to contribute positively to the organization that you serve. Ways to foster occupational wellness include working in a field that you enjoy, joining a professional organization, and obtaining certifications relevant for one’s field of interest/field of work.

 

Peace of Mind

Spiritual Wellness. Spiritual wellness promotes seeking meaning and purpose in one’s life. Ways to foster spiritual wellness include meditation, prayer, and spending time in nature.

 

Something for your body.

Physical Wellness. Physical wellness is the ability to maintain a healthy quality of life that allows us to get through our daily activities without undue fatigue or physical stress. The ability to recognize that our behaviors have a significant impact on our wellness and adopting healthful habits (routine check ups, a balanced diet, exercise, etc.) while avoiding destructive habits (tobacco, drugs, alcohol, etc.). It promotes knowledge of food, nutrition, and physical activity that will better the health of one’s body.

Something for your mind.

Intellectual Wellness. Intellectual wellness is the ability to open our minds to new ideas and experiences that can be applied to personal decisions, group interaction and community betterment. The desire to learn new concepts, improve skills and seek challenges in pursuit of lifelong learning contributes to Intellectual Wellness. Ways to foster intellectual wellness include reading, doing puzzles, and trying something new.

Something for your heart.

Emotional Wellness. Emotional wellness is the ability to understand ourselves and cope with the challenges life can bring. It encourages individuals to be positive and enthusiastic about oneself and their life and to have healthy relationships with others. Ways to foster emotional wellness include confiding in close friends and being positive about oneself.
